ANIMORPHS #6
THE CAPTURE

STORY | BOOKS | CHARACTERS

SUMMARY

It was really bad when Jake found out his older brother was one of them. It was even worse when Tobias stayed in his morph too long. But nothing compares to the horror the Animorphs are about to face. Nothing.

Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie and Marco have a feeling they know where the Yeerks' new base is located. And they've even figured out how to get in -- how many people notice a few flies on the wall?

But they never figured they might get caught. Or that Jake could fall into the Yeerk pool. That Jake could become a human controller. A Yeerk.

The enemy.

TRIVIA

  • ANIBASE: Katherine Applegate must not have had too much fun imagining the morphs in this book! She tells us that she used to totally creep herself out when doing bug morphs. "I mean, sure, I might morph a tiger or a gorilla or a hawk," she says, "but a fly? A flea? A spider? No way!"
  • ANIBASE: One of K.A.'s favorite reads in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, a book that not only influenced her writing (namely, her teen series Everworld) but also some words and images to Animorphs. "yrch", the elvish word for arc, became Yeerk, the flamed red Eye of Sauron became the mysterious Big Red Eye in #6 The Capture, and the name of a town became Ax's middle name!
  • While inside Jake's mind, Temrash taunted Jake of not knowing what the Andalites were truely like. By this of course he was referring to the arrogant history of the Andalites towards other species, which is later focused on in the series. We begin to see some development towards this in #8: The Alien when Ax finally reveals the Law of Seerow's Kindness to the Animorphs. This revelation and others are explored continually further in other books such as #18: The Decision, #34: The Prophecy, #38: The Arrival, The Andalite Chronicles, and especially in the The Hork-Bajir Chronicles.
  • The brief cameo of the B.R.E (Big Red Eye) featured at the end of this book left many fans puzzled, but it was actually just some clever forshadowing by Katherine Applegate to lead into bigger events for the series. It is after the events in this book that the B.R.E takes a notice to Jake as a threat to his plans, and it can be speculated that this is what leads the Ellimist to finally contacting the Animorphs in the very next book: #7: The Stranger.

Although at first the Elimist stays vague of himself and of his intentions, the true nature of the complicated battle between Ellimist and B.R.E isn't told to the Animorphs until #26: The Attack, in which K.A. finally gives the B.R.E his official name: Crayak.

NEW PLOT ADDITIONS

Temrash 114 was introduced in this book as Jake's Yeerk captor. He was rising Yeerk who was set to capture the state governor (who was also rising to be elected President of the United States) until the Animorphs ruined his plans by destroying his portable Yeerk Pool. Temrash, however, was able to escape in time as Jake accidentally fell in the pool that he was in.

Temrash quickly realized that he was the first of the Yeerks to find out the truth behind the "Andalite Bandits" and the second Yeerk to ever capture a morph capable host (after Visser Three), and by doing this he could quickly climb the Yeerk ranking ladder to Visser status.

Luckly though, he was quickly discovered by Ax to be captured by the Animorphs in time. During the time inside Jake, Temrash learned many things from him, including how to exploit his feelings towards the others, and even learn how to use his body to morph as Visser Three had with his Andalite host.

Temrash tormented Jake inside his mind and made him watch while not being able to do anything to help his friends. Although in the end Temrash was utterly defeated by lack of Kandrona Rays, he slipped something surprising to Jake: Temrash was actually Jake's brother, Tom's Yeerk. Jake was given many memories of Tom, and learned of how he was infested. This only helped strengthen Jake's reasons for being more determined as the leader of the Animorphs in hopes of not only saving Earth, but his brother one day as well.
