SUMMARY
The Animorphs and Ax have one true ally in their battle against the Yeerks: the Chee. So, when they discover that the Chee -- including their friend, Erek -- are in trouble, they have no choice but to help.
But the Chee's problem is much deeper than anything the kids could have imagined. It's hidden in the ocean. So far down that no human has ever travelled there -- and survived. And the Animorphs realize what will happen if Visser Three discovers the valuable secrets of the Chee. One of which is the Animorphs...

- ANIBASE: This book's featured cover morph is the giant squid. There are no giant squids in captivity, so the author of this book had to scramble for info on the creatures at the libraray and online. She even borrowed her mother's video of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea just so she could get an idea of how real squids might actualy move -- even though the one in the movie was entirely fabricated! "I had so much squid on my brain", she says, "that I dreamed of that sharp parrot beak and black eyes the size of hubcaps for weeks. I mean, c'mon; that's a lot of eyeball."
- The Drode comes into play here for the first time, sent by Crayak, directly after the Animorphs foil Howler army in #26: The Attack from annihilating the Iskroot race.
- The password to get into the Pemalite ship is "six", a single digit number. The Pemalites, although highly advanced, were far too trusting, and unconcerned about keeping security tight.

CHARACTERS
ANIBASE: New to the series is Drode, a spokesperson for Crayak, who is sent to taunt and mess with the Animorphs on occasion. He looks like a small dinosaur, though he has a human shaped head with large, purple-rimmed eyes.
We also meet Lourdes, a Chee posing as a homeless person that the Animorphs have to find and hide, and T.T., the boy who asks Rachel out and sets her on a big guilt trip over having doubts about her relationship with Tobias.
