ANIMORPHS #5
THE PREDATOR

SUMMARY

The wildly popular series by K.A. Applegate is back! The first six books of Animorphs return, with striking new lenticular covers that morph.

Marco never wanted to be an Animorph. He didn’t want the ability to change into any animal he touches. And he certainly didn’t want to be one of a handful of kids that are the planet’s only defense against a secret alien army. His friends know why he feels the way he does. He’s worried about his dad — the only family Marco has left. If anything happens to him, his father will be alone. But something big is about to change for Marco. Something that could finally give him a reason to fight.

RELAUNCH TRIVIA AND CHANGES

  • Promotional: This book was released with a writing contest attached at the end. The grand prize was all six Animorphs books autographed by K.A Applegate, and a Nintendo 3DS. The deadline for all entries was in March 2012. The winner is currently unannounced.
  • There was a fairly big controversy for this book, involving the whitewashing of Marco's model. Fans petitioned and voiced their concerns to Scholastic and K.A/Michael about this, and Scholastic responded back, confirming that they would change him. Full story >>

Update: Scholastic changed the cover model in July, 2011. See blog post.
  • The cover animal of this book can be interactively morphed on the official website by the new model. However, it is a full body animation, and is different from the morphing steps that you see on the actual lenticular cover.
  • See our FAQ for general relaunch details on the covers, number of reprints, etc

RELAUNCH EDITS & UPDATES

POPCULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY

  • Page 3 - "Body builder" replaces the "Arnold Schwarzenegger" reference.
  • Page 30 - "The Limited" is replaced by "clothing stores".
  • Page 30 - "Circuit City" is replaced by a "computer place".
  • Page 32 - "The coffee place" description is removed when Marco is explaining Starbucks.
  • Page 32 - The price of Ax's double latte is changed from "two ninety-five" to "three fifty-five", and Jake gives four dollars instead of three to the clerk.
  • Page 33 - When mimicking other people, Ax now puts a sleeve on his coffee cup instead of a lid.
  • Page 79 - Ant Vision is no longer compared to a black-and-white TV, but a brightness setting:

Classic: "It's like watching a really, really bad black-and-white TV that's almost all snow"
Relaunch: "It's like watching a TV screen with the brightness set really, really dark"

  • Page 92 - The quote about Ants ending the world is from Page 59 of "Journey to the ants" by Bert Hölldobler and Edward Wilson. The copyright credit is in the original, but not in this reprint edition.
  • Page 101 - "CD" is replaced with "Album".
  • Page 113 - "Cuisinart" is replaced with "food processor".

LANGUAGE / SLANG

  • Page 11 & 33 - "like" is now emphasized here with commas and in, like, a few other places.
  • Page 35 - Jake is no longer slightly "hacked off", but slightly "angry".
  • Page 94 - "temporary service" is changed to "temp service".

CONTINUITY / FIXED KASUs

  • Page 22 - "or any other controller?" is removed when Marco calls out Ax's inexperience in fighting Hork-Bajir Controllers. Most likely because Ax fought Taxxon Controllers in the previous book.

  • Page 6, 9, & 101 - "Spider-Man" is now spelled correctly.
  • Page 35 - A colon placement after "fleer".
