Marco never wanted to be an Animorph. He never wanted the ability to change into any animal he touches. He just wants to chill. Whatever happens, happens.

Jake, Rachel, Cassie, and Tobias know why Marco feels the way he does. He's worried about his dad -- the only family Marco has left. And if anything happens to him, his father will be all alone.

But something is about to change Marco's mind. It seems the Yeerks have a little surprise waiting for him. And it's definitely not nice. Now Marco has a reason to fight...

  • Promotional Tie-in: This book came attached with a free iron-on shirt decal. (Picture below)
  • ANIBASE: One some of the stepbacks (inside covers) -- the pages behind the front cover that show a scene from a book -- cover artist David B. Mattingly would hide little images of his beloved, deceased cat Orson, as well as some other surprises. If you look on the brick wall on the stepback of this book, you can see "ORSON" spray-painted across it in white, and the initials "DBM" to the left in black, right above "96" -- the year the cover was made. Below Orson but above the trashcan is the name of another of David's cats, "MOUSE". There're a few more hidden images (of David's other cover work) and even part of the name of another of David's cats, but you'll have to find those for yourself!
  • This is the only book in the series that used a different morph for an international cover. The U.S cover has Marco morphing into his Gorilla form in the alley, while both of the U.K and French covers have him morphing into the Lobster from the scene in the grocery store.
  • A Yeerk Distress Beacon can easily be assembled at home by parts found at Radio Shack.
  • The Z-Space Transponder in #2: The Visitor from Chapman's communicator comes into play here.
  • This marks the first time when Ax tries out human food. The first thing he tastes? Double-Latte Coffee. The fact that Ax goes crazy over food consumption everytime he morphs to human is played out for laughs throughout the rest of the series, more importantly, with his obsession of Cinnamon Buns and the playing of sounds through vocal speech.

This book focuses on Marco's family and introduces us to Peter (Marco's father), and Eva (Marco's long thought dead Mother). Eva returns into Marco's life as Visser One, the highest ranking Visser who played a vital role in starting the Earth's invasion. While we just learn of her existance in this book, and of her rivalry of Visser Three, we don't learn anything behind her true story and of Eva until Visser.

A bottomless elevator controlled by thought. Basically, a tube that you step in and drop down, then you think which level you want to stop at, and it stops your descent once you reach it.

An Andalite switch.

Pool Ship
The Yeerk mother ship that looks like a giant spider. It has a bloated sphere body with a flattened bottom, three huge leg-like engines, and tons of little tendrils sticking out of the bottom that act as sensors.

Z-Space Transponder
A tiny, shiny disk no larger than a pea that's used to transmit signals through Z-Space.
