SUMMARY
Almost nothing could be as bad as finding out your mother is Visser One. The most powerful of all Vissers. The leader of the Yeerk invasion of Earth. But it happened to Marco. And even though he's been handling it pretty well, he knew there'd come a time when he'd have to face her again. Knowing that the Yeerk in her brain had taken his mother away.
So when Marco, the other Animorphs, and Ax discover that Visser One is overseeing a secret underwater project, they know they have to check it out. But Marco's not sure if this is a battle he'll be able to fight...

- ANIBASE: So, you think Marco's funny? So does Katherine Applegate's editor, Tonya Alica Martin! She tells us that some of the jokes K.A. wrote for Marco were so hilarious that they would make her laugh out loud, and she'd pass them around the office so that everyone could have a good chuckle.
- The Leerans are first introduced in this book, and are brought into the series yet again in #18: The Decision.

Leerans
A sensitive race of water-dwelling amphibians, these aliens look like giant yellow frogs, with four tentacles instead of arms. They have large green eyes, big flipper feet, and a head that slopes back into a rounded node. And, oh yeah, they're psychic. Get too close and they can read all of your thoughts -- which is very dangerous for the Animorphs, who are supposed to be "Andalite Bandits" and not the humans kids that they really are. The Leerans are the reason the Yeerks are mutating Earth sharks -- since Leerans live underwater, the Yeerks need something deadly and fast that can attack them and break down the Leeran defenses so that they an be made into controllers. But the Andalites will soon be on the case -- and so will the Animorphs in #18: The Decision.
