ANIMORPHS #25
THE EXTREME

STORY | BOOKS | CHARACTERS

SUMMARY

Marco, the other Animorphs, and Ax have managed to find out where the Yeerks are planning to build their next ground-based Kandrona. That's a good thing. The location is supposed to be somewhere near the North Pole. That's a bad thing. The Animorphs and Ax know that the Yeerks are a "cold-blooded" species, but this is a little nuts! Who wants to be near the North Pole without Arctic morphs -- and wearing spandex?

Even so, the kids know that if the Yeerks succeed with their plan, Earth is pretty much done for. And Marco, the other Animorphs, and Ax aren't quite ready to give up the fight...

TRIVIA

  • ANIBASE: A lot of things influence a writer. For Katherine Applegate, this time it was the weather. This book was created during a particularly cold time of the year in her former hometown of Minneapolis hen it was below freezing outside!
  • Starting with this book, many of the books in Animorphs were ghostwritten. At the time, K.A. Applegate was raising her newly born son, Jake, and had begun her second series Everworld. At the same time, she needed to make her monthly deadlines for Animorph books too, so she hired ghostwriters to help write the books for her.

Once word got out that this was happening, many fans confused this, thinking that the introduction of the ghostwriters had taken K.A. away from having control over the series, or that she had left it completely in the hands of the new writers. Not so. It should be noted that each ghostwritten book was still originally plotted and outlined by K.A. before being given to the ghostwriter.

The ghostwriters were picked and hired by either K.A. or her editor Tonya Alicia Martin and all ghostwritten books were gone over in detail by both of them, making sure that the characters stayed in character, and that any message that K.A. wanted to get across in her books ended up the way she intended.

Eventually, if K.A. saw an author grow more comfortable and understand the Animorphs world better, she would allow room for creativity on their part. However, If a book failed to keep up to the Animorphs standard, it would go through a re-write by K.A. herself. A good example of this is in #28: The Experiment, where the last chapter was completely rewritten by K.A.

As for all ghostwritten books, you can easily identify them by the dedication in the beginning of each book. Most of them would have something along the lines of "The author wishes to thank ______ for his/her help in preparing this manuscript.". In this book, Jeffrey Zuehlke was the ghostwriter.

The ghostwritten books covered the Animorphs series from #25-52, with the exception of #26, and #32. Animorphs #53, #54, and all of the Megamorphs and Chronicles were still written completely by K.A. Applegate.

NEW PLOT ADDITIONS

ANIBASE: Marco finally gets a girlfriend -- well, sort of. Beautiful, charismatic Marian asks him out on a date. Unfortunately, Marco's humor and Marian's refined taste in music don't exactly mash, and things didn't work out for our poor funny boy.

We also meet Derek, a helpful comic Inuit boy who gives the Animorphs seal skins and leads them to their polar bear morph.

Jake Baby Seal, and Polar Bear.
Rachel Baby Seal, and Polar Bear.
Cassie Baby Seal, and Polar Bear.
Marco Baby Seal, and Polar Bear.
Tobias Baby Seal, and Polar Bear.
Ax Baby Seal, and Polar Bear.

Visser Three None.

Venber
The Venber used to live on an Andalite moon, until an alien species called The Five hunte them to extinction. Turns out a melted Venber results in a liquid that helped run The Five's computers. Melted? Well, the Venber aren't carbon-based, instead, they're made of ice. They're about eight feet tall and humanoid with heads like hammerhead sharks. They use interesting pole protrusions that jut out from their elbows to propel themselves across the arctic tundra on their ski-like feet. The Venber were long gone -- until the Yeerks did a couple of experiments and "resurrected" the creatures to act as their guards while working on the North Pole-based Kandrona.

None.
