Animorphs lands on Entertainment Weekly!

Thanks to Jenny, an Animorphs adaptation has been pushed for today’s PopWatch column in Entertainment Weekly. Here’s an excerpt:

Even though Applegate’s characters all had highly developed senses of humor, the series was also surprisingly dark — at least for the pre-Hunger Games era. Back then, most mass-market middle-grade tales didn’t bother exploring the shades of gray that lie between the poles of good and evil. But as the Animorphs books progressed, the Animorphs themselves grew increasingly jaded and shell-shocked. They did terrible things in the name of their worthy cause, then struggled to live with their decisions; they grew increasingly alienated from their families and non-Animorph friends, who couldn’t possibly understand the harsh realities of war. The book’s battles were reasonably graphic, but not in a way that glorified violence. Even morphing scenes, in which the kids transformed into tigers or dolphins or houseflies, emphasized how grotesque and disturbing it was for the characters to watch each other suddenly sprout claws or tails or a proboscis. (Also, the books taught kids cool words like “proboscis.”)

Animorphs‘ moral universe was also a lot more sophisticated than non-readers might expect. (…)

Amazon Kindle removes Animorphs #8

Thanks to Robert for letting us know, Amazon has now removed Animorphs #8 from its Kindle Store, which is currently the only way to legally purchase this book after the late cancellation of the paperback edition. We’re not sure if Scholastic is the one recalling these ebook editions back, but in case it is, our suggestion is to grab the ebook from other stores while you still can.

The Animorphs #8 Relaunch eBook is still available to purchase in ePub format at Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Google Play. If there are any other legal sources to buy this book, please post in the comments below to let the fans know.

Update: Thanks to KFY for letting us know, Amazon has now brought the title back on the Kindle. (November 28, 2012)

Animorphs #5 Relaunch Edits, and #7 Early Shipments!

Good news for Animorphs #7: Scholastic released the book 2 days ago, a half month earlier than the official release date! If you pre-ordered, then they should already be in transit. If not, then expect them to be shipped to you soon!

In other news: I have updated Animorphs #5 with the full relaunch edits! A larger cover for Animorphs #7 has also been posted, and a few other relaunch pages have been updated with minor details as well.

Oh, and I gave the character profiles an update too (You can view them by clicking on the individual Animorphs on the header up top). I rewrote a couple of the profiles, fixed the parent details (there were many of you who told me about this, thank you), changed up the pictures, etc.

That covers everything for now. Until next time!

Former senior programmer of SingleTrac talks about Animorphs: Shattered Reality

Thanks to Jason, there was a new interview with Jay Barnson recently in PC World. He was the former senior programmer of SingleTrac, which was the studio that was responsible for Animorphs: Shattered Reality, the 3D adventure platforming game that was released on Playstation in 2000. Here’s a brief snippet that provides some insight into the project.

The last official game by SingleTrac was Animorphs: Shattered Reality. In addition to being SingleTrac’s only licensed game, it was also an unusually low-key release for the studio. How and why did this uncharacteristic project come about?

JB: I don’t know the business side of how it worked out, but I know we’d had several discussions about doing licensed games previously that had fallen through. Animorphs was just the first and, as fate would have it, the last licensed title on which we went into full-fledged development. We ran into a lot of problems on that one, though.

What were the issues that you encountered?

JB: In the middle of development, the Columbine massacre happened, and for several weeks the media was making the video game industry out to be the designated scapegoat for that tragedy. Scholastic and [Animorphs series author] K.A. Applegate grew concerned and wanted to distance themselves from anything resembling “violent video games,” even though the books themselves got pretty violent at times. They demanded that we radically change the game design, salvaging what work we could, but the release date wasn’t going to move too much.

The new design was much more of a platformer, but that style of game wasn’t one of our strengths. It was a really pretty crazy scramble to re-design and re-write the game to get it ready for release. Before the final release, half the studio was laid off, including myself, and the remainder knew the company was on borrowed time. That might be part of the explanation why the release was “low-key.”

More Flipbook Animations by David B. Mattingly!

David B. Mattingly (the original Animorphs artist) is back again with new videos! He has posted up character videos for Jake, Rachel, Cassie, Ax and Marco (no Tobias?) which feature the flipbook animations that were printed in the original Classic books. I have created a playlist so that you can watch them all in order. Here they are:

Again, if you like these Animorphs updates by him, then be sure to comment on his videos! That’s all for now!

David B. Mattingly’s Animations, featuring Marco!

David B. Mattingly, the original artist for the Classic Animorphs series, has posted 2 new videos up on his Youtube channel. Here is the first one, featuring Marco in a few of his original flipbook animations:

The second video is for the Sanctuary screensaver morphs, which can be viewed here. This video, however, is a compilation and does not include the original audio from the individual videos that were released by Scholastic.

To watch them as they were, I have them stored in our video archive (scroll down to ‘Sanctuary Screensavers Morphs’ from the drop down menu and click ‘Go’). I saved these a long time ago, back when the Animorphs Sanctuary Club was still active at Scholastic’s official website.

Mr. Mattingly has also stated in his video summaries that if there is enough of a request from the fans that he will post more animations. So make sure you rate and comment on those videos!

UPDATE: The Marco video was removed and re-uploaded with other character videos by David B. Mattingly (Full Post HERE), so I replaced the above with the Sanctuary Screensaver video instead.
