THE MUTATION

STORY | BOOKS | CHARACTERS

SUMMARY

Visser Three is still trying to find a way to reach the Pemalite ship. The ship that was hidden thousands of feet below the ocean's surface. A ship containing technology so advanced that it is superior to anything even the Andalites have built. And this time, the visser plans to find the ship so he can use the power to complete Earth's invasion.

Jake, the other Animorphs, and Ax acquire additional deep-sea morphs in order to stop the visser's plan. But while trying to destroy the Yeerk ship, the kids make a startling discovery: an underwater civilization. Have the kids discovered Atlantis...or is it just another trap?

TRIVIA

  • ANIBASE: One of the downfalls of writing a series is the need to keep coming up with new idea after new idea. "Frankly", K.A. Applegate says of this book, "I think I was getting a little desperate for ideas!" Here's what she had to say about what might have been the influence for this book: "I used to write Little Mermaid books for Disney, so maybe this was my anti-Ariel fantasy."

NEW PLOT ADDITIONS

ANIBASE: Queen Soco is the leader of the mutated Nartec. She cares only about her people, and has a grand, never-to-be-fulfilled goal of one day overtaking the world of Surface-Dwellers. Naca was a Nartec guard assigned to the Animorphs.

Hahn Tunad is a poor Hork-Bajir that Visser Three attempted to mutate into an aquatic being. After seeing what the nartec are like, it's doubtful Visser Three will try this again.

Visser Three Luminar

Luminar
A baguely humanoid creature that Visser Three morphs. Bulbous with a wide smile, the Luminar emanates heat and can burn its victims by touching them.

Nartec
The Nartecs technically aren't aliens, but with their blue skin, gills, and webbed hand and feet, these people are so radically different from the humans they started out as, that they really can't qualify as anything else. They've lived beneath the ocean for thousands of years after the island they lived on gave out and sank. During that time, they've searched out survivors of downed planes and boats and brought them into the city, where they mated with them and then killed them. However, no enough "Surface-Dwelllers" have been captured, and the gene pool of the Nartec is growing thin. Soon they will die out entirely, despite their grandoise dreams of overtaking the world above.

Narna Rocks
Glowing, radioactive rocks that the Nartec use as a light source. In reality, ,it was these rocks that caused the Nartec to mutate from humans into the creatures they are today.
