ANIMORPHS #50
THE ULTIMATE

STORY | BOOKS | CHARACTERS

SUMMARY

Really big trouble is an understatement these days. The war between the Yeerks and the Animorphs is full on - and it's definitely going to get worse. But Cassie, the other Animoprhs, and Ax have a lot more going on than just trying to stay alive. Now they've got to actively protect their families and the free Hork Bajir. And they no longer believe they can do it alone. The Yeerks are just too powerful.

So Cassie and the others have to ask themselves a very important question: Is it time to increase their numbers? They all remember too well what happened with David - the Animorph gone bad. But this time do they really have a choice?

TRIVIA

  • Many things are referred back to in this book: The topic of David is the biggest one, who we last saw in #48: The Return, and whose fate was last sealed in Rachel's hands. Cassie goes over this with us, but never reveals the ending, as she doesn't know herself either. We also go through the way disabilities are looked at from alien perspectives from Ax, who showed much contempt towards Mertil, upon meeting him in #40: The Other.
  • ANIBASE: This book features physically disabled kids who end up becoming an adjunct team of Animorphs, and the author of this book was thrilled to have a chance to write about people who are usually ignored by the public and are vastly misunderstood. She has personal ties to people with disabilities and has been striving to find a way to make the lives of the handicapped better.

"People have no idea how heroic disabled people -- particularly disabled adults -- really are, " she says. "Isolation, segregation, and community disinterest are pretty much the norm for disabled adults. But I know this will change when, and if, enough people are made aware of the problems."

NEW PLOT ADDITIONS

ANIBASE: This book introduces us to the new Animorphs. All physcially challenged in some form or another (the only people the Yeerks refuse to make hosts) these kids are at first suspicious of the Animorphs but grow excited once they realized they will no longer be confined to wheelchairs. The leader under Jake for these new Animorphs is James, a golden-haired boy with a cynical outlook and a penchant for protecting others. Collette is a friendly girl with an active imaginationi, Kelly is cynical and sarcastic, and Timmy has a huge vocabulary and ironically a speech disability. Craig and Erica act as James's lieutenants and the rest of the new Animorphs include Jessie, Liam, Julio, Judy, and seven others.

Also mentioned are Elena, a young blind girl forced to go into hiding with the Animorphs after the Yeerks witness her talking to the kids, and Pedro, James's roommate and friend who is completely paralyzed.
